Sub-Offices During the Fourth Period (1865) - Les sous-bureaux durant la Quatrième Période (1865)
The year 1865 saw the Imperial postal network reach its greatest extent. Numerous sub-offices operated alongside the district post offices, providing postal services to towns and rural communities across Mexico. The covers presented here illustrate the postal markings, cancellations, and routes used by these local offices, many of which are scarce and highly sought after by collectors of the Imperial Eagles issue.
L'année 1865 marque l'apogée du réseau postal du Second Empire mexicain. De nombreux sous-bureaux fonctionnent alors aux côtés des bureaux principaux de district, assurant les services postaux dans les villes secondaires, les villages et les communautés rurales à travers le Mexique.
Les lettres présentées dans cette section illustrent les marques postales, les oblitérations et les itinéraires utilisés par ces bureaux locaux. Les correspondances provenant de certains de ces sous-bureaux sont aujourd'hui rares et particulièrement recherchées par les collectionneurs de l'émission des Aigles impériaux.
Sub-office No. 13 ACATLÁN → PUEBLA, Fourth Period (12 May 1865). Entire letter bearing a single 2 reales orange Eagle stamp (Puebla district), cancelled by the circular ACATLAN datestamp (Sub-office No. 13). The stamp shows full margins and bears consignment number 37-1865. A fine and attractive example illustrating postal communications between the Acatlán sub-office and the district capital of Puebla during the Fourth Period.

Lettre entière affranchie d'un timbre de 2 reales orange de l'émission des Aigles impériaux (district de Puebla), oblitéré par le cachet circulaire ACATLAN, sous-bureau n°13. Le timbre présente quatre marges complètes et porte le numéro d'envoi 37-1865.
Bel exemple illustrant les relations postales entre le sous-bureau d'Acatlán et le bureau principal de Puebla pendant la quatrième période.
Sub-office No 2 GAVILANES → DURANGO, 1865
Complete cover sent from the sub-office of Gavilanes to Durango, franked with a 2 reales yellow Imperial Eagle bearing the district overprint Durango 8-1865 and consignment number 93-1865.
The stamp is tied by the spectacular double straight-line "FRANCO GAVILANES" cancellation, one of the most distinctive sub-office markings recorded in the Durango district.
Only 200 stamps were supplied to the Gavilanes sub-office in this consignment, making surviving postal history from this locality particularly scarce.

Lettre complète expédiée du sous-bureau de Gavilanes à destination de Durango, affranchie d'un 2 reales jaune des Aigles impériaux portant la surcharge de district Durango 8-1865 ainsi que le numéro de consignation 93-1865.
Le timbre est oblitéré par la remarquable marque linéaire double « FRANCO GAVILANES », l'une des oblitérations de sous-bureau les plus spectaculaires du district de Durango.
Seulement 200 timbres furent expédiés au sous-bureau de Gavilanes dans le cadre de cette consignation, ce qui explique la rareté des plis provenant de cette localité.

Dolores Hidalgo (Sub-office No. 12) → Hacienda del Carro (San Luis Potosí). Cover franked with a 2 reales yellow stamp bearing the “No. 12 Dolores Hidalgo” overprint, clearly identifying the originating sub-office. A representative example of the sub-office system established under the Second Mexican Empire.

Sub-office No20 San Felipe → Mexico. Cover franked with a 2 reales yellow stamp overprinted 20-1865, cancelled by the oval “Administración de Correos de San Felipe” handstamp. An attractive example of Imperial Eagle usage from a sub-office of the Guanajuato District during the Fourth Period. Covers from San Felipe are encountered less frequently than those originating from the principal district post offices.

Intéressant exemple d'utilisation des Aigles impériaux dans un sous-bureau du district de Guanajuato durant la Quatrième Période. Les correspondances connues de San Felipe sont sensiblement moins fréquentes que celles des principaux bureaux du district.
Cuautla (Morelos) → Mexico City. Cover franked with a 2 reales yellow stamp, struck with the oval “Franco Cuautla Morelos” handstamp and the framed “Cuautla – Abril 14 de 65” datestamp. Sent beyond the local postal area of Cuautla, it illustrates the integration of sub-offices into the Imperial postal network during the Fourth Period.
Cuautla (Morelos) → Mexico. Lettre affranchie d'un 2 reales jaune, portant le cachet ovale « Franco Cuautla Morelos » ainsi que le cachet daté « Cuautla – Abril 14 de 65 ». Expédiée au-delà du ressort postal local de Cuautla, elle illustre l'intégration des sous-bureaux au réseau postal impérial durant la Quatrième Période.
Rio Verde (Sub-office No. 30) → Fresnillo. Cover franked with a pair of 1 real blue stamps of the San Luis Potosí District, bearing the overprint of Sub-office No. 30, corresponding to Rio Verde. An attractive example of Imperial Eagle usage from a secondary postal office during the Fourth Period.
